An ubiquitous Chinese expression of encouragement and support. 加油 (Jiayou or Gayau) is commonly used a as a motivating and encouraging phrase which translates into "you can do it" or "speed up".

This word has the literal meaning of to "add gas" or "accelerate" It is commonly believed that the term originated from first being used at the Macau Grand Prix during the 1960s, where it was a euphemistic cheer by supporters urging the driver to "put more oil into it/step on the gas" during the racing competition to encourage them to speed/accelerate faster.
